Hey Everyone,
I just constructed a new bench for my trees recently. The old benches were a simple series of ramshackle blocks and boards. Now that I've been in this hobby for quite some time and it seems I'll be doing it for as long as I'm on the planet, I figured it was time to build something a little more permanent and attractive.

The posts are 4X6 pressure treated and the top is rough sawn redwood. I stained it with an oil based stain with the hope that it will prevent rot given all the water it will be subjected to. I am currently building another small one on the other side of the pergola. Now I just need to improve my trees to a point that they are worthy of such nice display!:D

Let me know what y'all think.

Cory

I like the neatness of that bench. It is simple which is an often overlooked quality.

What is the exposure?

That is some nice work! Well done, very handsome. Having them up under the eaves I guess you will have to rotate them regularly for even sun? And watering is completely up to you as they are out of the rain?

Thanks. They are oriented to the southeast. They get morning through midday sun which is perfect for most of my trees.

thanks, Nails. Yeah, I don't know if I've ever seen anyone keep their trees under the eaves of their house before. I always have and not sure if there are any problems that could arise from that (the siding on my house is hardiplank concrete material so I don't worry about getting water on it). I do rotate them periodically so they get sun 360 degrees. As you said, watering is completely on me. If we are getting torrential rain, my trees aren't being drown.

Very nice set up. For much of the season, my trees are also under protection like this.

I am more impressed with the lawn. It looks like astroturf.

Petaluma is one of those places in California that is so blessed by the weather, you can hardly believe you are in California. Really. From me, it is like an hour a way, but a world of difference.

Do you ever go the the Sonoma Seed Bank? I love that building. (easterners may know their parent company Baker Creek Seeds)

We have the best weather I've ever experienced here (I grew up in Northeastern Montana, so I no the other side of the coin very well...). The coldest it ever gets is in the low 20's. The hottest it ever gets is maybe 100 degrees and that never lasts more than a couple of days at the most before the ocean breezes blow it out to the central valley... But don't tell anyone, ok? We don't want you here.:D

The seed bank is awesome. You can get virtually any heirloom variety you ever imagined or heard of.

Lovely setup, nicely done simple benches. Good job. Now lets see some closeups of the trees!;)
