Do any of these show potential?

Hello am...Well, there are 2 answers that need to be given. First, yes there is potential. However, you would need to let these grow untouched (not pruned) for about 5 more years. At which point, you could wire and prune. Then you would need to train them for another 3-5 years. So yes, there is potential. However, it will take a total of 6-8 years to accomplish it. I would be careful with the one in the third pic. It looks like it is very bare. Which means it is in a very weak state right now.

I hope this was helpful.

H O W E V E R . . . NONE of these are indoor trees. I'm afraid that 515 doesn't tell me much about where you are located, but unless it is Alaska, these conifers belong outside for most (or probably all) of the year.

Indoors they will suffer from too little light, no fresh air, and no necessary dormancy period, and they will die.

Easy Jim, she did say they are her first outdoor tree purchases.

Rob gave some good advice...let em grow. Spend some time looking at juniper bonsai and compare/contrast them to your trees.

515 = Iowa...are you near Ames? Look up DaSu Studios in Kelly, and at least walk thought the nursery to see some bonsai in person. If you're near Des Moines, the club meets at the botanical center on the 2nd or 3rd Tuesday.

yes 515 is iowa. i will be attending the next bonsai club meeting. I will just let them grow then for several years. By that time i should be more confident that i can keep them over winter. thanks

Look for Alan and Helene...great folks, long-time practitioners with excellent trees. Tell them I said hi!

The first juniper I see a very unique look in it's future. Picture 4 can be a semi cascade style. The right branch is headed that way.

Look at other people's trees and progress pictures. You will get a feel and idea of how to shape your trees. Also learning how trees grow and shape themselves in nature can help you shape your bonsais. If you don't know what to do, let the trees grow free and soon you'll have more branches and foilage to work into the design.
