My dad came to town and likes projects and building things. We decided on a bonsai bench- we got the general form from the internet cant remember where or I'd post credit.

Added a few pics of the building of it. Mostly 4x4s with lag bolts holding it, 2x4 for the bottom shelf. It's 8 feet long and 4 feet high, top shelfs a bit over 4ft high and 18 inch wide, middle is about 3ft high 18 inch wide, bottom is 12 inch high and like 18 inch high. The bench tops are cedar that we ripped to uneven widths between 4 inch and 2 inch and then placed where they looked good and fit.

I guess I need to grab another pic that shows the whole finished thing also

I think this is Jeremy Norbury's plan? Anyhow nice bench! I'm too lazy to do all that work so I just stack cinderblocks and put wood on top.

Very nice bench, too bad it could not have been built in Oak for the Japanese look, I would buy some Mission Oak Stain at Home Depot, 2 coats & it will look Japanese for better effect...
Compliments to your Dad, nice job.

Nice.

Too bad it doesn't come in "kit form" Maybe we will all get lucky and Ikea will come out with a bench for us like this one. Here's to wishful thinking.

I'm thinking about making the bottom bench easily removable. In my yard under the bench would be a good spot to heal in collected trees. Shady and more protected from the wind.

Nice ideas! Yea I'll probably stain it sometime soon. Ok honestly the wife will probably stain it she is much more artistic than I.
And I could definitely stand on all levels with confidence it would hold, it's a strong very sturdy design!
My dad said he wanted to pose with it once I said I was putting it on the forum, though I'm not really sure he has any clue what a forum is haha.

Thanks for the positive responses!

Just bought the lumber for the same plans,

Just bought the lumber for the same plans. I went with the 4x4 option too what size lug bolts did you end up using? Any tips?

I think we used 4 inch long to connect the 2x4 to the 4x4. Not sure what exact size though, my dad went to the hardware store without me for them, I'll look and see if I have a box or anything that says when I get home in the mornin.
Tips... it really all went together pretty well, we used those plans but ended up tweaking little things here and there as needed to it work. It deffinately helps to have at least one other person there though,
If I think of anything I would have done differently or any tips that might help I'll add em here.

The main thing we had to deal with was that some of the lumber was twisted or not straight, I think that's pretty normal and we made it work, if your comfortable building stuff I don't think that's a big deal. I will say we didn't have a square so we had to use a Mickey Mouse coloring book so our angles aren't perfect
