So I bought one at Lowe’s today for $5, couldn’t pass on the price for a project. It’s a gumpo white, I will post some pics tomorrow evening. What can I do with it now, repot? How hard can I prune it, chop the crap out of it or leave some green? Don’t know if I want to shohin or a medium size one, but I’m sure it will help with pictures so stay tuned.

They can definitely take some abuse this time of year.
I dug one out of my yard about 3 or 4 weeks ago, cut it back to a stump, cut 75% of the roots off, it's now beginning to show some buds emerging.

Ok so I forgot the before pic, but here it is after some work. Can’t wait to see what happens and the project for the future. Do I need to seal the cuts? CE21EBDE-A510-4CEF-86C7-156978D62003.jpeg01A742DC-5FCA-4917-A1AA-A1BA9A2E26E6.jpeg

Ok thank I will do that. Should I remove anymore or is it ok for now, I don’t know much about azeleas other than what I have read or videos I have watched. I have seen John geangle, I hope that’s right, his videos on cutting to a stump. Didn’t know if I could go that far this late?

If it's already begun growth again, I'd leave it for now.
John's videos were my inspiration as well.
He used to frequent this forum, but he bailed.

Cool I didint know that, too bad he left I’m sure that was good to have his knowledge on here. A guy I work with said I could have one of his azeleas around his house, I stopped and looked at it the other day. It’s almost 8ft tall and the trunk was thick, so I’m excited to get it. I just need to build a grow box for it and come up with some soil and I’m going to go dig it out, hopefully not all day. Right now this one is in what I had, which is chicken grit and potting soil. Is there any recommendations on a good mix without starting a war, I don’t mean anything that breaks the bank.

I like this one! I agree though I would either pull the trunks apart more to open them up to keep them twins, or help them fuse. If you take cambium off of both a little bit, then bind them snug against each other, you can get them well started on fusing together this year.

I wouldn’t worry about flowering. That will happen in good time. This has character.

Thanks!
I don't know if they'll move much... Those roots are a tangled (and possibly already fused) mess!

If they get fat enough to fuse, that'd be great, but it's not my worry.
My goal for this guy is to create a spreading, bifurcating canopy, to get as many fine growing tips as possible across the whole silhouette as possible, then grow flowers!

I am hoping for more backbudding to cut back too, some of the main branches are too long still.

I use pumice and lava, haydite and DE...
No organic material here.

I bet if you tried you could get them to come together that tiny distance without harm. Up to you. It is an interesting pair either way.
