Movin' on Up !!!

While i know my opinion won't count for much, I'll chime in after reading all the great comments already provided.

I like the look of the foliage filling in, on the last virt, but I don't think I like the trunk slanting at the angle. Maybe it's my ability to not think outside the box more, but to me this powerful trunk wants to go straight up. I like the carving but with the slanted angle like it's now on the underside of the tree and i don't know how to say it, i just don't find it believable.

Its like this big powerful tree somehow got blown over, and then the underside got weathered? And then the foliage grew back against the very wind that blew it over.

While I know the details on this tree are done well, I'd really like to see it straight up with the foliage from the virt kind of leveled to make it look more natural. This is probably a more cookie cutter way of doing it, but I think it's what i'd find most appealling and most natural.

Thought I would post up a virt I did tonight, of where I
plan on going with this tree...

I like the tree and its unique qualities, but as you know that is my "taste". I also like the last virt BUT I am pretty certain if you moved a bit to the right on that angle it would be even more believable. Just my opinion - not a critique. Just what I would try ;) It would toss it more in the viewers face and not exit stage right.

How about IF, the slant was not caused by a wind...rather by erosion and the wind have been blowing from the right all along (thus the deadwood at the right).

Another scenario, a tree may be getting battered all it's life from the right but one strong storm toppled it to the right. If you observe, you will notice trees exposed in this scenario have strong (tensile) roots at the right side and weaker at left...if you reverse the load...it will topple. Just like you bracing for impact from the front and someone push you from the back.

Mother nature have lots of stuff in her bag of tricks...sometimes it is easy to get tunnel visioned on one.

Very good points Dario.

Dario is as old as Mother Nature, he can make sense sometimes

It's a long way to go, just to get the movement to make sense visually. Movement is the key word.

It is very difficult to call on one virt and 2d but I am pretty certain that spin/move will do a lot for presentation and accentuate movement. Just my opinion.

...and I am told (many times and consistently) that bonsai is a long term project. ;)

The re-design was intended to create something better...at the expense of stepping back and I appreciate his vision. It won't happen tomorrow but he gambled well IMHO.

You guys are all so funny !!! The wind goes this way, the wind goes that...
But, my favorite part is Brian's Green Lantern, that is just freakin' awesome !!!
I never thought about it before, but I really do need to start looking at comic
book superhero poses for inspiration !!!

Now, for my next tree I really need to find one I can style like this !!!

Seem to recall a buttonwood that could fit this bill...?
