Montezuma cypress

You have it all planned out ๐Ÿ˜ The concept of no drainage is so scary to me.
The tree exploded in growth once submerged. The tub is overfilled every 3 days plus once every 3 months I completely drain the tub by tilting it sideway for about 3 hours. I leave it drained for about 24 hours then refill. I do this for bald cypress and this Montezuma cypress.

Here is another fantastic Montezuma cypress bonsai. This one was posted in 2014 in Muranaka Bonsai blog. Surely it has developed even more by now.
I am posting this picture as inspiration for anyone of us who wants to develop Montezuma cypress.

@Cajunrider how are you protecting your Montezuma during the hard freeze, just moving it to the garage? Also for the BC you have that are not newly collected, is there anything else you will be doing to protect them?

I will move the Montezuma into the garage. Others should be able to deal with the freeze. I am crossing my finger and hope that Batman can handle the cold.

The Montezuma went through some serious pruning and training today.
Before was a very wide canopy with very long branches.

After is much more compact. Bends were done on the main trunk to shorten the tree as well.

Looks good, is there any reason you don't use cut paste here?

Pictures were taken right after the chop and style. I hadn't put on anything yet. I am going over the cuts with my carving knife today before sealing them.

Any chance to get closeups of how you seal the cuts?

Also, whats the situation with the buds on what's left of the tree? How are cypresses doing with backbudding after a chop?

Cuttings are budding like crazy. I hope they will root. Tree is doing well too.

With the funky base I have on this tree, I am seriously contemplating splitting the bottom and create a killer base. Kill it or make it a bonsai time. Right now it is just an OK tree.

Drastic chop today.

I am my worst enemy. After the last chop, I neglected the tree, allowing it to grow long straight sections. Now I have to chop them all back. This could have been done quite a bit better.
Stay tuned. More action to come on this tree.
