Mesh for pot holes

Ryan what do you use for soil? I moved my ficus to a bonsai soil this summer. Should I not have and keep it in organic soil?

My Wife uses that heavy plastic mesh from the Craft store for cross-stitch - inexpensive and lasts forever. My plants do not need mesh as the substrate is rather course.

For my trees in training that need bulking up I use an organic soil such as Happy Frog. For those that don't need bulking up I use pumice.

Oops meant organic fertilizer I forget that people still use organics in their soil ;) in general I think it's important to share all of our experiences to help others avoid the same mistakes and/or problems that we have experienced. That's all ive done is tell others the problems that will likely result from using a non secured fine mesh. Furthermore I've repotted trees where I had thought no screen was used and an 1" into the root mass low and behold I find the screen half swallowed by the roots. Result: large air pockets surrounding drain holes as there was nothing preventing soil from washing out of holes

Hey Nate that is what I have found as well. I used drywall tape for a couple years and when I re-potted it seemed to have been "sucked up" into the roots/soil. There was no visible soil loss during the time that I used the mesh. I think by the time the mesh was sucked into the roots, the roots had grown dense enough to keep soil from escaping. I really did not see any clogging though. I do use the hobby store mesh now though.

Grimmy can you pm me with what size you use. I have a hobby lobby ab ac Moore near me. I would like to compare and see what the difference is.

BRW, drywall tape works great on joints in drywall too.
