Works with olives. Vince in our club has done it a lot. Smoke is correct that you bury the whole thing until shoots emerge.

would the bottom (formerly the top) develop roots and the top (formerly the bottom) put out shoots?

It works very well with apple root cuttings.

I heard that with root cuttings from oak (local species) it doesn't work. (?)

Ok....so....
In nature, if a branch ground layers itself, will the roots supply shoots in both directions?
What if the branch was removed from the main trunk, with shoots on both sides of the rootage.
