I'm planning to stick a couple of maples through boards, plant them in the ground and "forget"about for a few years. The idea is to get Ebihara-style nebari. My question is how long will the board last? I've gathered that pinewood is the best to use for this technique

If you are set on using wood, I would use cedar, but I am a northern boy! You can also use large washers. Good luck!

Not sure I can get washers with a diameter of 30-40cm :P
Would plastic be an option?

I think you are mistaken if you think you can just put them in the ground long term and "forget" and still come out with nice root bases:)

My experience, and others, dictates that they need to be dug and the roots worked every year for the best results...even two growing seasons can allow large roots to develop that will set back, or ruin, the desired results.

I have successfully used washers, cds, wood, and plastic wood. I like cds the best....once the roots are going horizontal...use a screw to attach a board to the bottom of the tree...the board can be used to arrange the roots appropriately.
