Little Princess

I'm not against this idea, but I'll wait until next year now to leave recovery time and see how it fairs.

Ok So here is what the princess has grown out like so far this spring.

I now know my first mistake was not cutting it back further than I did. I left a few short branches on with buds ready to pop thinking to allow it some easy energy with which to regain it's strength. Problem is now all the energy is going into those buds and small branches and it's not pushing out any new buds from all the nodes in the larger branches. Probably should have expected that to happen but I guess that's what happens when you don't really have a clear plan or direction before you start working on something... live and learn!

Is there anything I can do to encourage some new buds at lower nodes? Would pruning back the current growing shoots help at all? Not hard cuts just nipping off the branches halfway back, or I'm guessing that might just split the branch and it'll carry on but with 2 new growth points instead.

Otherwise my thoughts are to simply leave it be for this year and let it do whatever, then next spring cut it back to points with better consideration, put it in a bigger training pot and to some extent start over. I'm thinking something like this with cuts at these points.

I've been looking at this one again last few weeks and decided this spring I will layer it off the root stock. I want to get rid of the nasty big knobble where I removed all the lower branches and this will also help it looks less gangly and thin compared to it's height I think.

Still considering what to do with the 3 branches at a later date when it's on its new feet... If it survives being layered!

Still gets aphids?

50 cl 70+ degrees alcohol. One tablespoon of cinnamon. Let soak for 24-48 hours, add 75cl water. Shake and sieve. Spray the plant: no more aphids.

Efficient, and organic. Smells good too.

You cut a lot of roots last year. You might want to let it regain strength before another major insult. I can't tell for sure but the growth doesn't look that strong this year. If you decide not to layer, realize you can keep chopping back and should get more backbudding. There is less risk of losing the tree if you do it incrementally.

I figured it was either layer or chop the top again, but not both at once and possibly neither for another year.
If I chop the top back and it spends a year putting on new growth I'll have to see how well it fills out as to whether it's strong enough next year to handle being layered I guess. Might be the better way round to do it.

Haven't seen any aphids for a while! Had some late summer which I got rid of.
