I put a care sheet in the box and also have some information on the video. They will be fine in a cold place (not freezing). I would open the bags to let the tops breath, so that they do not mold. I recommend a cold garage or fridge.
These are looking great. Glad to see you re-use Monrovia gallon pots also! They must buy millions of those each year.25 wee beech wired, potted and mostly washered. Intention is to use these for forest in a couple years. Also threaded five through a cutting board and girdled a group of three at the base.
Those look really pristine! Glad they traveled so well. Keep us updated with how they do.My Left Coast order has arrived healthy, strong looking, and well packed all the way over here on the right coast!
maples for grafting and early stage projects, Japanese larch and scots pine for grow pots. Those latter two being relatively fast growing species that my only plan for is to keep alive for a long time before really getting into them.
Thanks for the suggestions. I have been looking for red pines for years and finally found a small supply. I have some seeded, and hopefully in the next few years I can begin offering them.May I suggest some Japanese Red Pine in the future?
I think you should be good to graft now. I do not think that the fridge will slow them down at all. you just need the scions threaded through before the leaves are out (assuming you are threading.)Oh no! Donor root graft tree’s buds are swelling but the trident’s that are getting the grafts aren’t moving yet! I’m going to have to bag them up and put them in the fridge to slow them down! Will that work?!
I’m putting the trees that are receiving the grafts in full sun to get them going. One has already been in full sun though. Tridents in my yard are like teenagers, late to bed and late to wake up!
thanks for the advice! It was only 2 that were showing green, but the others probably won’t be far behind. I’ll keep a close eye on it. I do also like the idea of defoliating for thread grafts. I’ll probably get a mix of thread and approach grafts, with majority being approach. I did find a smaller pre-bonsai trident in my garden pushing, so the others should be close behind. The last trees always seem to the the Zelkova and Cedar Elm. With the first being Chinese Elms.I think you should be good to graft now. I do not think that the fridge will slow them down at all. you just need the scions threaded through before the leaves are out (assuming you are threading.)
With tridents you can also defoliate the scion without much of an issue. Keep me updated
I should have definitely watched that, whoops.Just got my order and everything looks fantastic, well packed, and as described. I started to pot them up and then saw the explainer video on the home page https://leftcoastbonsai.com/ and found it revelatory! excellent primer on what to do with 1st year/ early root work. Thanks John!
Thank you so much for your support and kind words. I am working hard every day to get my small business established and moving in the right direction.I just received my first order from Left Coast Bonsai. All business owners should take note of how John does business. I sent a few emails asking about trees and products. Responses were timely, in depth, polite and accurate. The products where better than described, well packaged and priced beyond fair. Got a Vicky Chamberlain pot, fabric pots, root circles , seedlings and a pre-bonsai pine from Telperion farms and a few kg aluminum wire. He included “extra seedlings” which was much appreciated. Quality products sold at fair prices by honest people. Pretty much perfect in every way.
The way it should be.
There are many sellers I admire in the business. Forestfarm of Pacifica has awesome inventory, good prices and their packaging of live plants is the best!
Brent at Evergreen Garden Works is another seller who has consistently delivered excellent quality at fair prices. Brent is also very knowledgeable regarding growing and especially cultivation. Wis web site is very informative.
Finally my local grower Lonepine Nursery in Sebastopol Ca. Stephen and Amy run an amazing operation. Their ability to propagate pine from cuttings for example is almost unheard of. What’s the price of a Pinus Thunbergii koto buki without a graft? <$10.

Hi John, I am trying to get set up for that and I am on Instagram. Where to go from there has me baffledGood Morning Everyone.
I wanted to let you know that I am having an online pre-bonsai sale today at 1pm PST. The sale will be on Instagram Live and will feature a few hundred plants sold "home shopping network" style.
I am needing to do some major renovations to our irrigation system this summer and so I need to raise some money and get rid of some trees. Sorry for the short notice.
Hope to see you there!
