Korean Hornbeams

Come mid-spring there is an old man around the corner with a gorgeous (really Korean style) Korean Hornbeam Bonsai. Will try take a pic. Love your trees!

I've got a quite large hornbeam I fell in love with. Hopefully it twigs up fast.

Sounds good please post some pics! I pulled out something that is resembling a Korean Hornbeam (it was gonna get the chop from the gardeners who think it's "not desirable") if I remember it had some pretty large leaves though so it may be a Japanese Hornbeam.......though this is Korea..........tree might just need some good downsizing...unfortunately I couldn't get that much root material so was a bit worried it would not make it but its sending out some buds now...let's hope for the best because that is one stout gnarly trunk. Right now just letting it do its thing in its pot and giving it trace elements (slow release drip) to encourage it to shoot out leaves.

BJK: Where in Korea are you? My niece lives in Seoul (Gwanghwamun) and is interested in learning more about 분재. PM me.

Hey Bunjeh, sorry cant work out how to PM, SO embarrassing. Living far from Seoul place called Uiwang, I recommend your niece have a look on Korean search Engines as I am pretty sure there is a academy near Seoul somewhere. Plus there's a lot of info on Korean sites. Though to tell you the truth the general Bunjae scene is not big here due to limited space, Japan and China seem to have a greater respect for the art. If she doesnt mind travelling there is the 고려분재연구원, though I haven't been there myself I heard that it is really good.
was on TV too a while back. Also if she can get to 인천대공원, they sometimes have shows for 분재 in Spring or Autumn...hmmm they may have a website too. Hope that is helpful. (PS: Tree collecting laws are more relaxed than other countries so a trip to the countryside may provide some seriously good Yamadori.

Thanks. My sister-in-law says that interest is growing among apartment dwellers in Seoul, especially Shohin. I'll have my neice look around.

Hey BK! It's in winter storage right now unfortunately. I will be repotting quite soon, will take pics when I do!
Lol no problem when it awakens let us know.

Yeah, unlike many apartments Korean apartments have enclosed patios with floor to ceiling windows and that keep humidy with high sunshine so they are good for Bonsai, not great but good, my Red Pines and Juniper where ok with it. I think after the war people had "better things to do" like surviving...so it kinda went out of fashion a bit.
