That sure looks like mite damage... have you done checked for them by tapping some foliage over a sheet of paper? If mites are present I'd get some spectracide Malathion spray from a box store and hit this one every 10 days for 3 doses or so. As long as there's a little green, there's hope... but just a little.

Ok wow, thanks Dav4, that finally makes sense. I haven’t tried that. I basically just eyeballed it. Only found a fairly small amount of webbing but other trees next to this one had a bunch. I am really struggling at nailing down the reason for this kind of change when I haven’t done anything major and it’s been getting good direct sun and watering. Spider mites would make the most sense. Thanks again, I will try that test.

Spider mites are the bane of anyone growing decent juniper bonsai. They prefer hot and dry conditions... sounds like CO . I have a decent collection of evergreens that are susceptible/have been damaged more than once by spider mites infestations, so I don't screw around when dealing with an active infection. There are multiple miticides out there that are hopefully available to you in CO. Malathion is just one of several that I have in my arsenal.

Dav4 thanks for the info, that will be a big help. We seem to get a bunch, because, yeah pretty hot n dry here. Have you had any experience with Japanese white pines (grafted). Just got one and already having issues. Started a new thread

The only grafted jwp I ever had was debarked by mice while being overwintered a long, long time ago. Good luck.
