I won this tree from my local bonsai club in Central Texas. It was doing good till we had a really hot week. I watered daily and sometimes twice a day if the top inch was dry. It was under shade cloth in during afternoon sun. Now it's looking dead but the scratch test is good and green. I noticed these white and black spots on the trunk. (Looks almost like ashes from fire) They flake off easily and nothing seems to be moving, this tree was treated with copper fungicide as directed by the manufacturer over the past month as a different tree not close to this one had leaf spots. Any ideas on what the spots are?

It looks like Boxwood blight. I got his hard a few years back and it took out four of my trees. If I would have known earlier I would have burnt the original carrier when I saw signs. But it could have possibly been too late anyway.

Maybe someone with more knowledge will chime in but I would either burn it out bag it up and toss it.

Summary

With Boxwood Blight no wound or stressor is required and the entire plant is usually affected. The causal agent is the fungi Calonectria pseudonaviculata, which appears under magnification as white thread like structures. The fungi spreads quickly and black spots with a baize center appear on leaves and black streaking may appear on young stems followed by mass defoliation. With Volutella Blight a wound is necessary for infection to take place and thus only a few branches are usually affected. The causal agent is the fungi Pseudonectria buxi that appears under magnification as white thread like structures that mature to peach coloured cushions on the under surface of leaves and stems. The affected leaves die and turn brown but usually remain on the plant for months.

Taken from the internet for your consideration.

Burning is better, IMO, as the spores wont spread to wherever it is going.

Thank you for the reply. This is my only boxwood so should I be worried about the exposure to other trees that's happened so far?

Your boxwood is dead, unfortunately. The spots are likely wood decaying wood. As to what killed it, could be a number of things, from overwatering, to underwatering. I'd pull it out of the pot and have a look at the roots. Throw it away in a garbage bag along with the soil.
