if the roots escaped you will get strong growth but also on your roots so if you want to develop the roots suitable for a bonsai pot you might have to prevent the tree from doing that in the future..
looks like it grew allot and recovered well :)
 
I've seen similar growth rates in my own Carpinus caroliniana trees. It happens when they divert all of their energy into a leader. More often, they're very bushy and distribute growth more evenly, but, occasionally, just a couple of shoots get very thick very fast.
