Hi guys my missus let me pick a bonsai for my late birthday present so i went to my local garden center (no bonsai nursery anywhere near me ) and i was hoping to find a nice red maple but there wasnt any :-( .
I did spot this really nice dawn redwood forest tho only problem was its reallly badly pot bound so i got what i needed to repot it and a much bigger pot for it. here some pictures of it after iv repotted it IMAG0073[1].jpgIMAG0074[1].jpg
when i repotted them they did lose a lot of roots and i tryed to split them in to single trees since the roots where all compressed together so hopfully i havent killed them. plus any tips on looking after them will be welcome i know they are outside trees and will be going outside as soon as the root have a good grip on the soil and pot

Dawn redwood produce a LOT of roots in a hurry.

Did you repot while the foliage was out? If so, you may experience wilting and even branch loss, keep a careful eye on the trees for a while. Limit the direct sun and wind. I'd put them right outside now, providing temps are above freezing. They need good light but limit the sun for now, maybe a little in the morning.

yeah I did it yesterday about an hour after I got them lol. Only problem about putting them out now is I'm high up in a flat so my balcony can get really windy so Iv got them in front of a window that gets a lot of light all day and the window wide open to help with the humidity

I'm moving soon and I'll be near a nature reserve sure I'll be able to get some nice cuttings :-) anyway at the min the red woods look like they are doing well some tlc and they love it

Sorce, metasequoias grow like a weed, need more water than we would expect of conifers. I'm sure MD will enjoy them.

Do not built the design on branches you have actually. They are like bald cypress, tend to drop younger branches in the winter. After three years with mine I wired first branch this spring. So first the trunk lines and then what it'll keep after winter. They're full winter hardy.
