As I've been a good boy, not complaining or anything, during our rituals Black Friday trip to SEARS and Walmart I was allowed to buy myself a little treat

I bought this Picea glauca 'conica' at Home depot for $10 :)

It's my first pine s.l. and I find it pretty cute

Picea = spruce, not pine.

You bought what is commonly known as a dwarf Alberta spruce. It is not a preferred specie for bonsai, but Harry Harrington has done some interesting things with them (see bonsai4me.com). I had fun making a little group planting of them, like Harry did.

Picea = family Pinaceae, so it's actually a pine sensus lato as I said :)

I know it's a Dwarf Ablerta spruce as it was written on the tag anyway.
I also know that they have some issues as bonsai, the 2 main ones being that it take forever to get the wired branches to stay in position and also that they don't back bud very easily.

However I finally know that it was just $10... :)

Well according to the description:

Just saying...

I know, well no, I didn't pay attention to the 'genus' part actually, but when I looked up for the different forums I didn't see something like 'other conifers'.

However I'd be pleased to relocate my post at the right place, if I'd knew how to do that...

Be careful with those branches later down the road. You've created bar branches that will cause reverse taper.

What does 'bar branches' mean?

When you leave branches on opposite sides of the tree, like you've done. You've got one branch on the same level as the other. Both branches will cause that area to swell and create reverse taper.

Over 40 years, and after several tries, I have yet to keep one of these alive more than 9 months to a year. Good luck.

Thanks for the explanation, I'll check that carefully.
Anyway one of the idea I had was may be to split the trunk so in this case, problem solved ;)
Well if it survives more than 9 to 12 months of course... :)

Didnt look very hard did ya...:p.
"Other conifers" is just 2 boards below the pines section.

Ive always avoided Alberta spruce for the reasons stated. I hope your survives and you can make something nice from it.

Ah the dreaded post-turkey drunkeness.

Yes, I know it well...lol

I got one.
New thread later!

I'll buy another one soon but this one I won't be allowed to mess around with, after Xmas I'll just plant it in our yard :)
