This material was a gift from my teacher that he wanted me to do something with. It was a cutting he had wired up and has been growing for 3 years. There had not been any styling work done after that. The first pic is the tree as it was given to me. I wasn't really sure where to go with it at first, but I think I found a nice little tree in there. It has almost a 2 inch base and is 4 inches tall.

The short version of the work is that I chopped all the trunks but 2. The 2 remaining trunks were already touching so I wrapped them together and tied them with wire so that they will fuse. Then, I cut most of one of those trunks off, but keeping enough so that it stayed alive and would fuse to the other one. I put bends in the remaining trunk to create some nice movement in the upper half of the tree. Lots of work for a little tree. I hope to increase the shari in the future and also let the tree grow wild for another year or longer. Then, cut it all back again.

Thanks Bill :D

Hello and thanks Stacy...Yes, I wasn't sure what to do when I first brought it home. There may have been a couple of routes. I found that a very small, informal would suit the material well. As the base thickens and the height is kept the same. It will only add to the beauty of this little 4 inch tree. As far as the shari, here is a virt of what it will probably become. Just a straight forward, meandering shari half way up the trunk. The tree is so small, that the shari needs to be carved with something that is not much bigger than the tip of a pencil.

p.s. The shari is actually serving a purpose. The base of the tree is somewhat in the shape of an egg laying on it's side. A shari in that area distracts the eye from the shape and makes the whole trunk have a more even flow of movement..well, visually anyway.

can't wait to see this with a really nice pot. Very sweet tree you found inside there.

i like the twisting of trunks to fuse idea! last week I gathered a bunch of birch seedlings and wrapped several together with tape allowing one to poke out ever inch or so. I hope it leads to a decent trunk formation and a little more taper!

Cool little tree Rob. I'm concerned, though, that all this intense work with your trees has allowed you to lose focus in other aspects of your life. I mean, really, a Coke Classic???? No Vermont microbrew or ene a Sam Adams seasonal available in SE MA? Come on, snap out of it man!

Hello gergwebber.. I would like to see what you did with the birch seedlings.. Feel free to post it here or in another forum/thread:D

Hi Dave..lol... I know it should have been snapple or at the least, diet coke. I have not drank in a while.. So drinking while styling a tree might mean fire wood ;)

Thanks Brian.. My camera isn't that good, but here are the close ups. The first one shows which 2 trunks I used and the second one shows where it is tied and hopefully fuses.
