Is there a particular reason why you didn't mix in verm for the last 3?

Planted 12 of the Cork bark ( quercus suber) . I still have 8 but I am going to wait and see if these start sprouting or not before planting the rest as I have restricted lighting for my indoor plants and don't want to have too many needing light before the spring. If nothing is showing by mid Feb I will plant the rest 20240114_110055.jpg

So the cork bark acorns I tried to start in the house decided to just go mouldy, despite using hydrogen peroxide as preventative measure, I bought the acorns online and not sure that it was a good source anyway, so bought some more ( different source) planted to go in my garden shed ( with window) and I will try my luck outside, the rest of the others I also threw into a pot and in my shed. I am getting some more this week hopefully, so they will also get planted and put outside 20240203_135009.jpg20240203_161006.jpg

Spring is springing so started planting out. I decided as I seem to have a higher success rate than I expected that I would try some experiments ...cutting tap roots, adding a washer, placing a tile under etc ...started with a couple of the German/English Oaks and some of the US red ...20240325_113504.jpg20240325_115408.jpg20240325_122142.jpg

So, one tray with multiple different oaks clearly got too wet ( we have been getting alot of rain lately) and most of them had sprouted, but then turned to mush, ...so currently running with US red oak, German/English Oak and Cork oaks ,let's see who survives the next stage 🙂

US red oaks and German/English Oaks growing, stalling a bit this week due to temperature drop...Cork oaks all had healthy roots when I transplanted, but none popping their "heads out" yet...also have a few more US red oaks which are still in a tray, they are pushing up, but not seeing any green yet and some in root pouches - same status. I have done a random mix of normal pots, pond baskets and root pouches to see what seems best.

I had forgotten that I had ordered some pin oaks in October....they arrived yesterday 🤦‍♀️, I have planted them but not expecting anything ...the english/German oaks are doing OK, same with the US red, the corkbark oaks have roots but are being very slow to poke their heads up. I wired a couple of the larger red oaks, will see how they react the next couple of days, if they remain fit then I will wire some more so they are not all straight sticks.

Update..
13 US red oaks ( acorns from a tree at work)
9 English/German Oaks ( acorns from our village)
14 corkbark oak ( ebay purchase from Bulgaria)
Some wired, some with tap roots cut/ washer added, and various different "pots" just to see what difference they make. A few I up potted into slightly larger root pouches already.
One of the corkbarks ( the tiny one) got pulled out and thrown around a month or so ago and I thought it was a goner, but seems to be growing again. A couple of "clumps" or twins growing so that will be interesting.
Based on leaf size and branching it is clear that the corkbark are probably the best candidates, ....we will see..need to get through the rest of the summer and survive their first winter20240623_114307.jpg20240623_114850.jpg20240623_115129.jpg20240623_115304.jpg20240623_115524.jpg20240623_115701.jpg20240623_115830.jpg

Some losses....I presume from a bird...some were already 15 cms high, came out in the morning to empty pots 🤬

9 US red oak
7 German/English Oaks
13 Cork oak

Some I up potted twice already with no ill effects. Some got flatted by the wind and rain we have had this summer but I decided not to put stakes in, just let them grow how they want. Some of the US red and English Oaks had a little wire on20240811_141223.jpg20240811_140844.jpg20240811_135759.jpg20240811_135233.jpg20240811_134131.jpg

The Cork bark are not so easy to photograph as I have 7 all together set in a tray with substrate and don't want to disturb them until repotting time

I realised yesterday that I have ALOT of repotting to do this spring, so decided to start early on the trees that I have frost protected. So that means the Cork bark oaks are on the list. Got a few done, will try to get the others done in the next days20250202_124942.jpg20250202_124954.jpg20250202_130520.jpg20250202_130015.jpg20250202_131526.jpg20250202_131652.jpg

Nice! 👍
How old are those? I started 44 cork oaks from seed last year. Over wintering them in WI now. They seem to be fine. I have them in my basement now at 62* with grow lights on them. Still waiting to see new growth.
