Japonicus' Japanese White Pine

Great progression! Looks like next repot these areas will get some focused attention.

Mostly we have a love - sorta distaste relationship with moss. Been experimenting with moss on and off the lower bark for a couple years now. Looking at the benefits vs negatives of moss on roots and trunks.

Note these observations apply to this area only. Louisiana, another moss Capital in the US, might experience entirely different scenarios.

At this point it seems it‘s a plus and minus situation.

If left to stay on the trunk perpetually, the moss will, in fact degrade the bark slowly over time and can create an indent lower down..

If removed in the fall… and when taken out of storage.

… and left to grow and stay on the roots during the growing season, moss seems to foster increased expansion. (Increased surface moisture being taken in?)

… and left to grow and stay on the lower trunk during the growing season - no major impact appears to occur.

These observations need a few more years to fully develop.

Thanks.
Right, I am not a fan of moss.
I don't try to keep it. Moss happens :)

Next year I'm waiting till December to clean out the old needles. I did this some time in October to early November. The last 2 days I've spent a bit of time cleaning the new dead needles doubling my work.

This is about 25% of the needles from the last 2 days or one quadrant.

I see a few spots as I comb through the foliage that needs the branches shortened and wired.

Sprayed w Daconil. Phyton27 next week.

I’m just starting with JWPmine finally arrived . Is that the principle fungicide you use . It seems pretty broad spectrum . As a Canadian there is lots of chemicals we can not purchase as the general public .( lots of people here cross the border to buy stuff for there landscape and gardens. ) myself I’m considering getting the licence . It don’t seem that bad a deal . Like a 2 day course on the weekend . Opens up what your legally allowed

It is yes. I get nothing but big fat zeros when I contact 4 county extension agencies.
It's like I have to go under cover as a bonsai enthusiast, and keep it a secret that I'm talking about bonsai trees.
One agent said he drove by the house, and saw that it was bonsai trees and dropped it like a hot potato.
Didn't think to take pictures he said. He never left his car.

I put all my pines up under the sunroom in Winter protection and sprayed Daconil on them all today.
That is the 2nd application along with the Infuse granules at 1st spraying.

I don’t get what you mean about the four county agency . And the agent . Is the chemical restricted in the USA

I live in Cabell county
when I contact 4 county extension agencies.
I also contacted 3 other county agricultural (I had left ag. out) extension agencies for ID of disease and control
but always hit a dead end when I do.
No restrictions beyond precautions on label.

Daconil is weak sauce imo. Go to domyown.com and get some heavy hitter fungicide. Get several different kinds and rotate them frequently to avoid resistance.

That’s interesting . So your saying the state agency will come out and identify the disease . We don’t have anything like that in Canada that I’m aware of . I checked and the fungicide is avail here to the public .

Gosh. Weak sauce? Not a competition,

Wondering if we are recommending products to others that are inherently dangerous to not only the fungus, but manifestly to the user? …and if this is really the right thing to do?

Buying commercial grade chemicals is a sure way to hurt yourself and others …especially over time. Absolutely do not recommend using these products at all unless one is licensed and has proper safety gear

A couple examples: going to domyown.com the first fungicide recommended is not a suspected carcinogen, it’s a known carcinogen!

Heritage G. Carcinogenicity: Category 1A

The second EAGLETM 20EW Fungicide
May be fatal if swallowed or enters airways,
suspected carcinogen, reproductive hazard, organ danger etc

Sometimes there is no reasoning with folks about the dangers of hazardous chemicals. Especially use over time and safe storage.

Some folks feel if it can be bought it’s gotta be safe to use on bonsai. Or stored in a hot garage where kids can find.

In any event, no matter what one uses, recommend folks actually go beyond the product label to downloading Rand reading the latest SDS for all hazardous chemicals one might think of using. It’s the best way to understand the precautions and hazards involved for both use and storage.

Then buy and the best safety equipment to avoid the risks and maintain it well.

Not saying don’t use. just be wise and when you do use hazardous chemicals.

Here are the rest of the SDS’s mentioned
SDS for:

Infuse - suspected health hazard but not listed - a safer choice

Daconil (Eye hazard, cancer hazard etc)

Pyython27 (Skin, eye and explosive hazard)

Any chemical is dangerous if used improperly. If you drink enough water it can kill you as well. Does that make water inherently dangerous? No. You just need to use the brain God gave you and use common sense. Same goes for stronger fungicide. Follow the directions and you'll be just fine and it might just save a prized tree from death.

I'm so tired of people being negative about chemicals just because they have side effects if used improperly. /rant.

Don’t want to hijack this excellent pine thread so last I will satin chemicals. I use as little as I can. Example I deliberately don’t grow species of trees . That play a partnership . In problems with other trees . Cedar apple rust for example . I grow apples . I’m always interested in deference in laws and rules . Comparing Canada to the USA . Example multiple chemicals are legal to apply to food in Canada . But illegal in the USA . ( mostly dyes sprayed on fruits and veg )that does not change there safety . In the case of pesticides/fungicides . The tighter control in Canada is primarily due to .homeowners misuse . Especially dilution, in densely populated areas . Something to think about.

Pulled this one from the cave to catch up on some Fall cleaning work this past weekend.
Quickly was diverted to unwiring Sept. 2023's wiring job. Then I was able to start the cleanup.
Not the best time to wire considering the new buds, so I just opened up some areas that needed loght
and just got picky with what I wired and didn't.

Oops, shoulda removed the wire last Summer it looks.

I think I got all the dead needles and then some, and hopefully all the wire.
Did some silhouette pruning, cut backs to capable growth, and plucked needles underneath where I should
and left a lot of under growing needles where I should. I hate having single apical buds at the branch tips
but it looks like there as many singles as there are triples. Another reason to wire in Fall.
Now to put the pot back in the cave and bury the pot in mulch again.
This will mark my 20th year with this tree :)

Nice!

Just getting ready to wire one of ours later this week.

Cheers

Thanks, I got wire on 5 branches, but most is incognito :)
It's too easy to break buds wiring here just a month before they start moving.
I pinched candles back 75% in 2023 mid April full extension, so it won't be long now.
Take your time and then some.
