by digging down around the base.sometimes i even bring my root hook.other times i just use my fingers.you could find them too, but you have to be prepared to leave with muddy hands, just bring a rag.
also, i let the staff know that im going to be digging around in the plants looking for good bases.most of the time theyre not really bothered.

think i posted this acer somewhere else.i bought it from a garden centre a few weeks ago, it has potential as a naturalistic maple...
i had a better a look at the roots today and also reduced some of the branches while leaving plenty reserve as will be cut back harder in the grow season

lots of options.lots of shoots, i could potentially go in and do a basic wiring already.if i decide to move it on, someone will have a very nice maple to begin developing, great potential in this, everything is there20191029_155619.jpg

Nice! Looks kinda like the same basic structure I've got on a Sango-kaku I picked up recently. Is your grafted? If so it's blended in very well. Mine is pretty well done so there is no bulge or misalignment of the two sections, but visible all the same because of the coral bark colouring difference - debating whether to ground layer it eventually as I imagine the roots are going to be crappy, haven't looked yet!

i didnt really notice a graft on it, maybe just blended in well.

this might be a graft point, this is the back of the tree

Hmm could be?! Hard to tell, if it is grafted it's not at all obvious in a way I'd be bothered enough to ground layer it especially if you're selling it on. Nice radial spread as well already!
Your other picture reminded me I really need to give my greenhouse a good clean sometime before spring 🤣

yeh the roots aren't too bad. one of the roots at the back is a little high and maybe in spring could be removed. ill probably hold on to it for a while and do some work on it. in spring make all the necessary cuts, seal everything up. let it back bud and grow out. begin callusing etc
i can get more of these, so potentially i could even keep this.

Not if I get to them first...

Yeah those are nice grafts! You seem to sell your work pretty easily anyway whether it's grafted or not.
I'll try get a couple of pictures of the coral bark I got recently. I actually got 2 - one for my garden to go in a sodding great stone pot which I've drilled the bottom out of for free growth, and another slightly smaller which will become a bonsai hopefully. It was lifted from the ground about 3 weeks ago, so going to let it settle in it's new large pot for a while and do the new rooting thing before it gets any big chops.
