Japanese Black Pine slant style.

Apex seems to indicate flow to viewers left. Despite foliage on viewers right with sweet "drop branch", feels like a "negative" from a photo, like in a mirror? Tree is f'n trick as a treat!
For the longest time, the tree absolutely moved to the left… but…If you stood in front of the tree now in its newer orientation, you’d probably feel that the tree moved to the right due to the dropped branch… and the apex is still a work in progress.

Dav4,

Your pine has an awesome trunk, but the foliage is worrisome! Do mean miracle grow, as in: miracid (the one with azaleas on the box cover)? If not, I highly recommend you try it out. I used one spoonful per gallon once per week from spring to mid-late summer and my JRP responded with very vivid green. My non-grafted JWP foliage became noticeably bluer too.

T
And what do you mean by one spoonful Tanlu? Do you get long needles doing this?

Yes, the color of the foliage is washed out a bit from the flash and lights from above. I will say that the tree is still a bit weak and the needles could be darker... I'm pretty sure I have had an over-watering issue with some of my trees which may hasn't helped. And before anyone says it, I have fertilized weekly from March through Novemeber with full strength miracle grow and fish emulsion (like all my other trees)...this one just needs to be babied and watered appropriately for another season or two.
Hi Dav4, I think I have an overwatering issue also with a number of my pines. They don't look bad, but just don't do anything but sit there with very little growth. Does that mean that they have root rot and I need to repot and get rid of the bad roots or what is the best solution for that? Thanks for help!

Honestly, that’s hard to say without looking at the tree, the soil it’s planted in, and the roots. The key with growing healthy trees, and conifers in particular, is good soil along with lots of sun and water. I plan on repotting them next year and getting a better look at what’s going on underneath the surface.

The Dougie is magnificent. Two great trees. JBP, in particular, looks sleek and show ready.

Sometimes my mind thinks about scrolls being a good accent for taller, sinuous trunk line as part of a three-point display?

Michigan huh? That's even colder than moving back to New England! Weather is nuts though....still have tropicals out! And it's like that for another week.

Good luck with your move.....might want to invest in maybe some camo shorts or something. Michigan, the Florida of the north! :D

Thanks Lance. I absolutely agree with you about the scroll, but considering I literally threw this display together in about five minutes between packing bonsai pots and painting:)… and I also don’t have a scroll that would probably fit the fall mood… anyway, according to my sources, southern Michigan is a solid zone 6A. I think that was what my yard was when I was in Massachusetts 12 years ago. I’ve never been more happy about climate change until about a month ago :).

My comment wasn't intended as a critique, viewing in a thumbnail would surely provide a more cohesive image.

I have a few "taller" trees, including a JBP with "thin" trunks. Combined with a nice table from @Hartinez, it'll be a large ensemble. I'm just trying to reconcile the large amount of empty space between the tree/table and much lower accent/planting. Just curious about your thoughts in a perfect run-up to show day. Having an opportunity to source appropriate elements and the time to plan a layout.

I like the Dougie's display. Nice adjustment of the table. Character branch already strong and no question of the trees "direction". No need for a scroll here, everything seems balanced.

JBP looks even better if you consider it's start. Those earliest images, compared to now, speak to the great care and application of proper technique. Well done. Looks about as even of vigor distribution as ya'll can get! Nice moss job and "nut-sacking", if I may be so bold to mention...... ;) :D:D:D:D:D:D

I'd say that, when viewing the display in person, the empty space above the accent wasn't particularly distracting... the allotted area per display was actually pretty narrow so it would be easy for someone ham handed at display (that's me!) to muck it up with too much stuff. With that being said, I nice small moon scroll would have been a welcomed addition.

Gosh i can't remember when I wrote that response. But to answer your question regarding increased needle length in response to fertilization, yes and no. For the JRP, yes, but since I'm decandleing in early summer anyway it doesn't matter. I don't fertilize after I've decandled. For the JWP, the needles elongate a little, but since my goal is a thicker trunk and recovery from any work I've done on it, I'm not worried about needle length since they only help the tree and will fall off in a couple of years.

You might have moved south before the "Polar Vortex" became a "thing"!!! :(

I thought about asking you how your JBP's were waking up and if you had re-potted any of them yet. The bud's here are starting to lengthen and get a little white at the tips. I usually take this as a que to proceed. I might just wait the next couple days out and do it mid-week. I have a fairly protected spot but this vortex can linger longer than forecast.

🤔

Now, who doesn't like a piece of wicker garden furniture? That's a tree living it's best life or at least the one it'll have to get used to.🥶🥶🥶

If my tree could talk, it would probably be asking me why the hell we moved it to MI. You can see it on the patio furniture waiting in the queue to get moved back into the workshop later today... 15F Sunday night 🤬 .

80s is on the way just in another few months. LOL. We will be seeing 90s soon down here.

So, I kept all the developed JBP shohin, along with this one and several others in development but with lots of potential, in my workshop/cold room through the winter. The rest were stuffed into the makeshift cold frame outside. Good news is that it seems I didn't lose any housed inside or outside, and everything still appears dormant. I'm merely being cautious with the ones that overwintered inside as they may have begun to wake up and 15 F is just too cold. I don't envision re-potting JBP for at least 3-4 weeks either... I'm full on re-potting the D trees as we speak.

The average daytime high for March 26 where I live is 50 F... which was the average daytime high for mid January where I used to live. I'm not sure why I find this funny but I do.

Looking great, Dave. Bark is really coming on, and foliage is well-balanced. Teach them folks up there somtin ’bout JBP.🤪
