Japanese black pine seedlings in training

The 'shark gills' frequently show up at the bases of acer palmatums, where the 'root collar' spreads out horizontally from the vertical trunk edge - kind of like a Shar Pei, huh? Makes one think that it is just too much skin, but it isn't like skin wrinkling at our elbows when our forearms are raised. It isn't obvious how this comes to be, but I've never given it much more thought.

Do tell about the 'vascular impediment'.
Good observation.
I think when you typed "our forearms are raised" you meant "our forearms are flexed". If one flexes the forearm, the horizontal skin lines must be shown up at the lateral and medial aspects of the elbow, with these 2 areas are bulging out. It should also happen when we bend the branch.

I almost finished working on my pine collection this morning. It took me about 18 days so far!
I will post some of them here . It will be before and after . I pruned the Spring shoots back either completely or partially; depending on how I wanted the branches were. In some trees, I even pruned back to the previous growing season parts. They are growing so well. I also wired some trees. Right after finished working, I fertilized them all with Woodace 12-3-6 ACRE acidifying fertilizer, Dr Earth organic pellet fertilizer and Humic acid granule. This is my routine for at least 8 years and it works very well in my area.

6th. I like this one because it is only 15 cm in height and has very good tapering. Its bark already has interesting.

8th. I also love this trunk line with a few sharp angles

but I don’t like these 2 parts A and B because their length are almost the same ! If I kept them as they were, it would be too boring!

In other direction, A and B makes a acute angle and there is a branch goes straight out from this angle. It is not good at all!

My resolution is removing of the B. Solved!

To make a nice trunk line movement, I have been combining wiring and cutting techniques I like to have soft and hard turn, up and down, right and left in the trunk movement. It is based on negative and positive, yin and yang. It is natural! Do you believe in FengShui ? I do. 😊 To create the sharp turn, no way you can get that effect without using cutting.
This trunk has a big branch removed. Sorry I forgot to take a picture prior to cutting but you can imagine what is trunk line if that branch were still there .

on the superior third of the trunk, I plan to make the red line as trunk line and will remove the yellow part . I will not do it now. I want to wait until next year and see what happens. Thing may change !
