I bought this on a whim last year in Florida, and now I am debating if I should keep this tree as a fruit tree, or if I should attempt to bonsai it.

It's developing very pretty bark.

And the leaves are quite small already, partially thanks to a bad summer sunburn defoliation.

But it's got an awkward rump...

I could airlayer? (couldn't find any conclusive evidence these can be airlayered)

Or I could keep the rump as a quirk, and chop it instead. From what I read, they can handle a severe chop and repot, with good subsequent backbudding.

Any insight on jabuticaba in general as well as the design is appreciated20241230_124428.jpg20241230_124418.jpg20241230_124403.jpg

I picked one up this year, it has grown like crazy indoors this winter...might be my favorite tropical at this point to be honest.

No clue about air layering them, but should work. Might attempt an air layer on a branch you don't mind losing first and see how it goes?

Awesome Jabuticaba, I started training one a month ago, I have one question, what caused the burrel at the base of your tree?

It doesn't look like a burl. If you look at all the photos it looks like either the trunk is twisted around into a knot or a root wraps around.

Looking at the photo closer, it may be more likely that the entire trunk loops around, would need to see the soil dug out around it more to tell probably.
