I've had this Ilex Verticillata 'Winter Red' since 2003. It may not appear this way, but this tree is large: 57 inches wide, yet it retains a graceful feel. There are quite a few scars on it from trunk splitting and bending that you may be able to see. This tree changes its shape slightly from year to year based on the weight of the berries and leaves.

Never would have guessed the tree is that large, nicely done! Beautiful.

Very different indeed. Nice feel.

Would really like to see a close up of that pot.

It's wonderful, and different. Or maybe it's wonderful because it's different...

How do you keep it from tipping over???

uhhh...good question, JudyB. When it's just sitting on the bench, I use small bungee cords and hooks. I used to use rope, but rain and weather makes it difficult due to stretch. When I'm photographing the tree, or when I show, I use wax on the bottom of the pot. The wax actually is toilet gasket wax. It can be shaped because it gets pliable at body temperature. It is extremely sticky, but is easy to clean off the pot and the wood slabs.

For stacy allen muse: Here's a picture taken of my ilex in profile. The 1st picture was taken so the image was foreshortened, to add some movement. Although the present picture has grace, it doesn't move quite enough for me. The pot is a bit small, even so, but the branches are less heavy. I've been looking for a really good glazed round pot for this tree for a long time, but haven't found one yet. I hope I find one soon, because this year is when it gets repotted, again.
