I grow small trees in various “containers”

This is more of an introduction as I need some assistance moving forward. I ended up in Washinshington after getting out of the army for medical reasons( I’m crazy). Lol. Anyway, while searching for a place to reside the fam and I would stop by the PNW bonsai museum almost daily as an escape from the stress. Bought a bonsai book. I’m sure you know how that goes. When we found a place, I started digging up all kinds of seedlings from the yard. Some I left in the ground to get larger and cut back randomly. JM’s, birches, doug firs and random trees I haven’t figured out yet. That was back in 2007 so I’ve had some for a long time, but they are not even close to bonsai status. They are more like decent starting material. Sort of. But if I haven’t killed them yet I must be something right. Maybe? I do random experiments with propagation and growing methods. I tried growing a corkscrew willow upside down. Went on my first yamadori mission this year. I’ve even got a tree growing in a trash can lid. I do it for the peace of mind, growing trees keeps my mind at ease. I’d like to take some of them to the next level if possible, so I’m going to start posting some of my stuff to get your opinions. I’m not really into the group setting of clubs and my wife is tired of listening to me talk about trees. Lol
I would say you have a knack my friend. Enjoy the journey, you deserve it.

Since I’m in the sharing mood today, I will share one of my oldest from seed trees. It popped up in my yard about 15 hrs ago. I pruned it with a weed whacked the first 3 years, but it was stubborn and kept coming back. The 4th year I let it grow. I grew and chopped it for 6 more years. I had no idea what I was doing but it kept growing. 7th year into a large pot. This is it last December.895D1EA3-8AF2-440B-8F10-53A3E8325956.jpeg
Last June I removed some large branches but it didn’t skip a beat. So I decided it was going in a real pot this spring. Here she is after major root reduction. In the only pot I have that could fit it.

I’m thinking round pot later. Is it perfect? Heck no! Is it good? Not really, it needs lots of work, but as a first I’ll take it.

I have invested more time into less fruitful endeavors, and this tree even looks like it could be something respectable some day, so you beat me out twice.

Seriously, I'm digging the slanted broom style it's heading toward. I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes the next fews years.

Yeah, I really like the slant situation as well. It’s what it wanted so went with it.

One of my issues with having a love for trees, is that I have a hard time wasting opportunities to grow more. The trees I can’t stop growing is corkscrew willows. Why are you so easy????? Every time I need to trim it, in the buckets it goes. So I have about a half a million of them.Usually small stuff but this year I had to remove a real branch and of course it’s all growing along with my water bill. Thirsty thirsty thirsty, especially in this early stage. If any of you Washington nutters want a willow….. I’m going to start getting rid of some of them, somehow. But if you want one let me know. Lol

Way back in April I promised some photos of my trees on plow discs. Better late than never!

The first is a dead bald cypress trunk with fig ivy. The fig ivy refuses to hold itself on the trunk, hence the vinyl tape.

The second is a Portulacaria forest. The disc has been bent up on two sides to hold a mound of soil, with muck on the rest. Both have gorwn in since these photos and look a little better now.

Here’s a fat one I’ve sort of been working on while in the ground. Last year, air layered top off, Dug down to small feeder roots(yard is all rocks) added soil, chopped one 3 inch root. This year chopped another 3” root. Maybe dig next year, not sure yet.
