Not to hijack your thread, but I was just wondering if you would know if Korean Hornbeams would fuse together over time if tied together? I have one that I'm playing around with (still buried under snow atm) and am just curious that's all!

There are two Korean hornbeams,the true Korean hornbeam has very small leaves which will not look so out of scale,the pic above is the other type

The type with the smaller leaves takes forever to trunk up,I've had some in the ground for years and the largest one has a trunk diameter of only a 1-1/14"

I love it!
But I like the tree more, so I would take the presumed difficulty of getting it in that pot as a sign to NOT jam it in there.

I do keep seeing it as a bit larger, and if @discusmike is talking about your tree being the one with big leaves, and he is correct, I would definitely consider a different path!

I think in heinsight i may have rushed into this project a little bit on the day of purchase at the show.
And i think to get the tree to where i want it im not going to rush onto anything.

I planted the hornbeam today into a small pond basket and thats where it will stay untill im absolutely sure on its path in the future.
I also put some sphagnum moss and toped that with moss to keep the moisture in, in the summer.
So i took what you said on board @sorce.
I will be patient and lets see what the future holds for this tree.

I also put moss on the palm sized maple forrest. I started with a layer of sphagnum moss then sprinkled moss spores ontop of that so should have a good layer of moss soon.

Charming forest Rob. I'd love it even more if there was a way to put a little wiggle into those trunks and a few of the longer branches? Also watch the top of your main trees as they are dense. I'd get in there and simplify your structure as much as possible. At that size it will fill in very, very quickly.

yeah i was going to wait till summer when the branches are a little more flexible to wire a few out.
I had wondered what to do to the tops as they are very busy and swelling alot in places from alot of branches. But they are the only branches on the bigger trees at the moment and i didnt want to push my luck thining it out so close to giving it a big root prune and repot.

I think you can easily cut that whole top off now and grow a new leader from lower down. If it makes you feel better, then you can wait and do it later. You can also pick one shoot from the many you have now and prune the rest off. The cut needs to be nicely and cleanly done so that you don't get an ugly and bumpy scar. If it were me, I'd start a brand new top from perhaps the next node down. But please do what you are most comfortable with.

Thanks i will look into it tomorrow and maybe before doing anything get a few new pics and try and draw some possible cut points on it and show you those to make sure im choosing the right place.
I agree that the largest tops do need change though

An update on the palm sized forest display now the foliage is hardening off.

I just need to re do the moss as it hasnt started to grow and is turning black.
If was the first time i have tried putting moss on a tree.
Can anyone share Any tips or articles on moss and how to correctly deal with it so i can read up and get it right next time.

Here is latest pics on the korean hornbeam.

Im realy happy with it so far and @sorce and @discusmike the leaf size does appear to be on the smaller scale as there hardening off now and seem to have stopped getting bigger.
