Hughes juniper changing direction

Today at my bonsai club workshop I had my hughes juniper worked on by our club big dog John egert and he saw a different future for my juniper. First photo is when I bought it in may, the second photo is after initial clean up, styling, and filling in a bit. The final photo is this morning after Johns styling (sorry about poor quality picture.

I thought big pruning should be done in spring before the first growth, what kind of aftercare does this tree need to survive?

In my experience with this species it comes back strong no matter when hard pruning is done. For aftercare it goes under 50percent shade cloth and mist maybe 3 times a day it should recover well but I will post updates when it fills in a bit.
