I like to have a idea were I’m going early in the process, adding wire doesn’t interfere with the trees growth and adds movement in early stages there is no benefit in having straight poles growing for a few years imo.Wondering do you just let everything grow right now to thicken up and heal large cut? Make decisions later? Just a thought
At least 90 percentile of the future trunk of this tree is a root, it will be fairly uncertain if any new buds will ever grow from it on its own, in my mind I need to look designs to determine were I should carry out the approach and thread grafts next season.I suspect you will need to just let that one grow a few years and settle out. It is likely that much of that trunk and root base will die because there is too little foliage and branching to support the existing pathways between branches and roots. Anything you do now to limit growth will only further contribute to the dieback. Let it grow and see what happens in the 3-5 years...then you can make some styling decisions.
The left branch at the moment is just a shoot that is being trained for a thread graft next year. I am considering once initial work done to put it in the ground for a few years to thicken the branches a little.I think the left is new apex and lowest branch first branch. Need to get that tree back in the ground or at least a big grow box.
Is that lava coming out of the hole in the roots?
No lol, they fused roots that have not been exposed to the sun. I’ve been removing the soil that was stuck to them in preservation for a lime wash later in the year. In the previous pic they were wet also. The fine roots are a few inches down, there will be more fused roots to expose in a few years time.

It should look better once the lime sulphur goes on. It’s a odd piece of material and I’d like to look at a style that could go with it.Ah that looks probably more realistic!
