Hi folks looking for some suggestions and ideas on how would you style this tree? At the moment I was going for a twin trunk kind of style although I keep thinking that there could be better ideas.

Wondering do you just let everything grow right now to thicken up and heal large cut? Make decisions later? Just a thought

I suspect you will need to just let that one grow a few years and settle out. It is likely that much of that trunk and root base will die because there is too little foliage and branching to support the existing pathways between branches and roots. Anything you do now to limit growth will only further contribute to the dieback. Let it grow and see what happens in the 3-5 years...then you can make some styling decisions.

I would let it grow unchecked for 2-3 years making cuts if needed before I would make a choice on style

I like to have a idea were I’m going early in the process, adding wire doesn’t interfere with the trees growth and adds movement in early stages there is no benefit in having straight poles growing for a few years imo.
In addition there is only one branch and I’d like to start thread grafting next year, helping the tree design and it should help it giving the tree more energy.

I think the left is new apex and lowest branch first branch. Need to get that tree back in the ground or at least a big grow box.

At least 90 percentile of the future trunk of this tree is a root, it will be fairly uncertain if any new buds will ever grow from it on its own, in my mind I need to look designs to determine were I should carry out the approach and thread grafts next season.

The left branch at the moment is just a shoot that is being trained for a thread graft next year. I am considering once initial work done to put it in the ground for a few years to thicken the branches a little.

Is that lava coming out of the hole in the roots?

No lol, they fused roots that have not been exposed to the sun. I’ve been removing the soil that was stuck to them in preservation for a lime wash later in the year. In the previous pic they were wet also. The fine roots are a few inches down, there will be more fused roots to expose in a few years time.

Ah that looks probably more realistic!

This thread should come with a warning, I'm gonna have nightmares! :D

Agreed, just go mental and lean in to the horror!

Interesting material. When was it collected? What does the back, left, and right look like. How large is the chop?

I wouldn’t choose the lime sulfur treatment. I’d hold off for more natural discoloration and aging. The lime sulfur will look forced. I think the roots desperately need some environmental exposure.
I think the lime sulfur will create an image of a horseshoe standing on unfinished concrete.
Just my view from a long ways away. In person maybe the whole setting looks different.
