Let me expand my thoughts on that...
I would consider a fused trunk trident as a "novelty" tree. It's something out of the ordinary.
I guess I should say that I could classify bonsai into two classes: mainstream, and novelty. The mainstream trees are your pines, maples, elms, junipers that you "typically" see. The novelty trees would be trees like cork bark black pines, wisteria, grapes, ivy, etc. The "unusual" trees.
To me, the novelty trees are fun, and they have a certain amount of "gee whiz" about them, but I wouldn't want them to comprise the majority of my collection. I prefer the old standbys, I guess.
But maybe thats just me and others feel differently.
