So to revive this thread...I was able to snap some shots of this tree leafed out. I'm hoping someone can give me an idea of what it is. The leaves look really large, but depending upon what it is maybe they can reduce. Who knows?

Based on the seeds capsules, it looks like it may be oxydendrum arboreum.....aka Sourwood. I believe that you're within its native range.

Looks exactly like a sourwood after some research. Thanks for the ID! Looks like it's not great for bonsai, but I might see if I can make a larger tree from it. We'll see if I can get the leaves to reduce and the internodes to shorten. Thanks again!
