The root is gone. When looking the tree over I was afraid it would cause too much reverse taper in the apex of the tree. I was willing to tape it to the trunk to let it fuse, but it was just too thick to really move. Now I've got a clear view of that beautiful trunk.

Nah, from what I've heard microcarpa don't really take root cuttings like Willow Leaf do. There's nothing unique to this root that I'd want to keep anyways, so I just tossed it.
