Hinoki cypress ‘wells special’

Nice tree, thanks for sharing. Looks great in that pot as well.

Another question, so I build my box and I’ve read some conflicting opinions about soil. The most consistent is “mixture of akadama, lava rock and pumice in a ratio of 2:1:1”
Does this seem right with trees everyone here had experienced with or is this just a matter of opinion or am I over thinking ?

One of Bjorn's recent Bonsai-U videos was about hinoki from nursery stock. He mentioned hinoki prefer to not dry out, so soil mixes for deciduous trees are usually good. If I recall correctly, he specifically recommended straight akadama, 4 parts akadama to pumice, or 4:1:1 mix. He also said if you're going from large nursery containers and heavily organic soil, a transitionary pot with mostly akadama and some organic soil will help the tree acclimate more easily

This is the Hinoki I did the work on.

First step in its journey. I removed about 1/2ish of the potting (so far no big graft lump).
It’s going to be put in the flat wooden training box I just made.
How much more soil should I remove?
For the next two weeks here in south central PA it’ll be mid 30*s in the morning and mid 50*s afternoon.
