Hidden Lake Gardens "The Art of Bonsai"

If you bring her along they have a great food truck! We can all get fries...šŸ˜

*him; if I'm there, he'll be there! I saw that, definitely looking forward to the food truck!

Sorry I missed you two this morning... Met Joe (MTM) on the way out and had a nice visit with the staff!

Bought two smaller trees and hit the food truck on the way out...šŸ˜

Also the Larch Demo was given by this guy who introduced himself to the audience as John G, & got me wondering if it was the same John G here on Bnut.

Unfortunately, I didnā€™t get there until about 1:30.

It is a long drive, but I was glad I got to see both the show and their collection.

Versus the Ann Arbor and 4Seasons shows, I liked how this was more spread out - the vendors were set up outside, which was nice. And, a food truck ! Whoever planned this did a good job.

But, the show area was a touch cramped - I was constantly bumping into people (however, I think thatā€™s ok, it seemed that there was a good percentage of visitors that had no clue about bonsai, so good to see the interest). (The AA show vendors seemed to be really squeezed into the back rooms, and the last couple 4Seasons shows I went to had no vendors - so, both good to see the vendors have a nice spot, and good to see multiple vendors).

I sat through the Japanese Maple demo. Iā€™m not sure what I was expecting, as Iā€™ve never gone to the free demos at shows, but I thought it might be ā€˜mid levelā€™ content. Iā€™ll hand it to the curator of the bonsai (John Jenuine? Not positive on either the name or spelling), he perfectly tailored the presentation to the crowd. The questions all seemed to revolve around why does a bonsai cost what it does, and how can you tell how old it isā€¦.definitely an entry level demo - but, again, perfectly suited to the majority in attendance. I guess heā€™s done this before šŸ˜

Regarding the trees (both the collection and show), There were a few Gingkos at an early/mid level of development that looked good (sorry, no pics of those). Most of the show trees were ā€˜okā€™, decent for a somewhat local show. I did appreciate that there were actually a lot of trees - my recollection is there were ~50% more than the last 4 Seasons show, and maybe comparable to AA.

Here a few pics of trees in there collection - the last two pics are from trees in the show.

Sorry I missed meeting up with anyone, but AA is only 6 weeks away! We can try again.

Do any of you know if there will be a 4Seasons show this year? It seems access to their site is intermittentā€¦honestly, I donā€™t know if theyā€™re still a club.

@Michigan Tree Murderer , do you mind if I message you? I believe you have some contact with Green Witchā€¦Iā€™m interested in your thoughts. (Again, thatā€™s a long drive for me, but it seems like the only nursery in the state that has any ā€˜realā€™ bonsai - but Iā€™ve not been there yet).

@MGTT Sure message away. :) BTW what's AA? The contact I have with Green Witch Gardens is they're 15min away from home & I've spent a lot of $$$ there over the last two years. When I walk in they all yell my name like the show 'Cheers' when Norm would walk in. ;) They do have some really nice trees, and just this year they've added a lot more stock, and collected trees to their inventory. GWG is billed as Michigan largest Bonsai Nursery, and it's getting bigger.

I got the same vibe at the Larch Demo, lots of new people which is great. At one point during questions someone asked how the trees stay in the pot. John the instructor of the demo explained wiring the tree to the pot, and when he showed the bottom of a nearby JM pot, the crowd seeing the wires holding it in half of them said 'Oooo Ahhh' like they were watching fireworks. :)

There were outdoor trees?? We missed that. My son was sitting on my shoulders taking a dump while I was in the indoor exhibit area, so we kinda rushed through that. Also couldn't find where the demo area was, but did buy a couple nice pots.

Then the little dude sprinted around the entire lake, twice. We caught about 20 frogs along the way.

I had to ask someone, but the demo area was though the conservatory, (behind the food truck), & also the same place the outdoor trees resided. Sorry about the poop neck. :)

It's one of his favorite places to poop. Sometimes he asks to go up just to deuce, then wants back down. I'm sadly used to it šŸ˜‚

I started a thread on the AA show in late August. Are you guys going?
