Hoping I can get a few pairs of extra eyes on what I thought was just normal bark cracking/peeling for one of my elms. The more it progressesn, the more I start to doubt it's normal and all is well. The tree is very healthy otherwise. Thanks in advance!

The official term is "exfoliating bark" and yes it is normal. It is actually one of the features of Chinese elms that people look for.

Here is a picture of a full grown that has lost all of its Lace bark except on smaller branches that have not matured.

Quick update / follow up question to this slightly dated post. While looking at one of the exfoliating areas I happened to notice what I'm afraid are some kind of pest eggs.
Hoping someone can please identify? 1000005745.jpg1000005744.jpg
