Hello all, I got a Chinese Elm for Christmas

If spring is on its way at your place repotting now is good. When cold weather is forcasted try waiting as long as possible but repot before vigorous growth begins. Make substrate and pot ready. Read about repotting. There are lots of videos out there. Live bonsai- Mirai the video on creating beech forest is a good one. But lot of others and several posts on repotting on here. Look for rootbase from top. Remove part of below and part of the sides of the soil. Elms cam be bare rooted. For your comfort leave most feeder roots and remove some thick far away from trunk.

Thank you mister, I will definitely read up on substrate and repotting, and the roots etc.

Repotting is one of the most scary things in bonsai to start with. It is difficult to know when you remove too much. Elms are forgiving but giving proper care in general can be difficult enough for starting out.

Since you're in California, having new leaves in winter is normal.

Trees here think it's spring right now!

Still, don't mess with it until those new leaves darken and more sprout, which shouldn't take long.
