Hello all! 3" nana basic question

I wouldn't remove any soil from the plant. Put some new soil in the new pots and slip the plants (roots still covered in the original soil) out of the liners and into the new pots. Make sure they're firm in the new pots. When those pots get filled move them to the next size up.
Plastic liners should do, right? I've read a few places to not even bother moving it to pottery until its finished.

Interesting. Would one limit the size of the deadwood based on the current pot size? How is that determined?

Ummmm, depends! I suppose the smaller the deadwood/tree, the quicker it will be look finished etc.

If you have a longer bit of deadwood you just need a longer living Juniper to attach so it'll need more growing time first....it's just practicality really. The best section on Tanuki I've seen in a book so far was in Dan Barton's The Bonsai Book - good exchuse to grab one off the bay and have a read!

Or a couple of examples:

Siguy, your trees are waaay too small for this procedure. They need to grow.

6-8" tall x 6-8" wide is big enough I'd have thought?

And all you really have with that tanuki stuff is a sheep in a wolf's clothing. Looks tough till the real wolves show up at the party.

Yup, the ones in those photos are too small I agree (I got 6-8" from post #1 in this thread).

Nothing wrong with Tanuki for styling practice in my book, or as long as the owner in open about it. Like my Tanuki Larch:

Beautiful, keri. Really thought provoking. Not sure that's a reasonable way to describe trees, but that's my take.

Re 6-8". That was what I expected from the ad in both height and width. If you add the plastic liner, then we're talking 6" high. Width on two of the three is 6-8".
