Hello,

Does anyone know where to get Goyomatsu Japanese White Pine seedlings or seeds in the United States? I searched online and didnt find anything except larger ones. I found Kaede Bonsai-En and it looks like they are sold out.

I have JBP to trade or $$.

Thanks,

Funny... I didn't think they were that rare. I bought 100 from a nursery on the west coast, but they were in tubes (for landscape) and I had a lot of trouble teasing out the roots, replanting them, and getting them to survive. Now I just looked - and I don't see them anywhere.

Yea, it's weird. I have one JWP I bought for $10 about 5 years ago. Not sure of variety. I wish I had bought more. How many of yours survived?

I wrote to Adams Bonsai and he is also out of JWP saplings. I got on the waitlist for Zuisho and he said it would be next year or possibly the following just to get one!

Also, I realized and want to clarify that Goyomatsu is japanese for Japanese White Pine. I am not looking for any particular variety at this time. 20230818_175253.jpg

Those needles don’t look Japanese White Pine at all…

Covid completely disrupted supply chains associated with overseas seed sources. Couple that with the fact that JWP seeds sometimes take 2 years to germinate and the seedlings grow soooooo slowly and you begin to see why the seeds and young plants are so hard to find right now. I gave up trying to source JWP seeds or seedlings and now focus on P. sylvestris and P. densiflora, which grow well here in the frozen north.

It's a 5 needle pine for sure. I bought it from a reputable plant nursery thst did bonsai. It's always been long and leggy unfortunately. However, it was wired to try and compact it a little.

Makes sense, I should do the same and just stick to native pines like short leaf, pitch and VA pine. They are so much cheaper and vigorous.

I got some seeds from here:

I had a problem with this seller, I complained and he blocked me. He was not pleasant to work with. Read the negative reviews.

Thank you. Did you stratified and germinate yet?

Nope! Will start as we head into winter.

I did miss that. They SEEM to look right…. We will see. Luckily only got one pack.

I can get jwp of like 10 varieties at least. Because of my store I'm ordering some for this spring. If anyone has a specific request let me know. I gallon is the smallest I can get from my nursery.

Are these seedlings? Most nursery stock is grafted and I think people are looking for them on their own roots which is why they’re looking for seedlings or seeds specifically.

I was able to get a very nice young JWP from Wayne at https://riverbendgardens.com/ but it looks like everything posted on his site is grafted at the moment. It’s worth contacting him though as he doesn’t always post everything he has on the website and he’s generally very responsive. This was the 6y.o. seedling I got from Riverbend

Where are you ordering from? Send pics when you get them and I might be interested.

I would be curious to know the varieties and to see pictures / prices when they come in! I’m on a tree buying hiatus after Nationals but I’m keeping my eyes peeled for a decent, non-stick-in-pot WP.

I just have the wholesale list heres all the white pines some are limited some are 1 gallon 3 or five some only come in 3 gallons etc.

If it is a 5 needle pine (hard to tell based on the picture) I think it is a Pinus Strobus (Eastern White Pine) based on the long needles.

Your guess would explain the long needles and why it doesnt look like other JWP. I recently bought a Pinus Strobus from a club auction and the two trees look almost identical except the buds of the new pinus are lighter in color. I'll try to send pics later.
Thanks
