Its got a good future and is way bigger than it looks. I usually like huge strong trunks but this is a taller specimen. Has nice ruff bark.

Nice pine ! I really like tall old black pines like this. They seem to have a certain feel or vibe that really makes me stop and just take them in. Can we see a close up of the bark ?

Paul,

Was it decandled this past summer? It doesn't look like it.

Once you get it on a regular decandling program, those branches will develop good ramification and the needles will shorten.

It will take a couple of years to really thicken up those pads.

yes it was looks to me like mid to late july based on size of the buds. but last years needles are almost full length. Its going need few years of TLC to look right.

Nice pine. I really like them tall and skinny like this. Starting from this image, what do you see as needing improvement? What are your plans to get there?

Glad it was decandled. I just couldn't see the buds.

It will look much better once they harden off this fall and you can pull the old needles!

I see lots of wiring fun in you future!

Beautiful tree, looking forward to future updates!

here is close up of the bark.

Paul,

Love the bark!

That last pic from the underside is most instructive...

Look at how most of the sub-branches come off the branch at nearly right angles. Like an "L". You know how to fix that, tighten up those angles to "V"s. The tree will look 100 percent better!

Adair the bark was the selling point for me. I agree its a perfect example how everyone around here has no amazing pines. One the local guys came by today and asked why is it a different color than the other pines you have it not as green. It was hard to explain even though it looks healthy to most people its not. Im pretty sure last repot was in 2007 so its way overdue probably why the vigor is not very high. Oh yes and iv got to get all the old wire off as its days from cutting in a little but got cut it off due to all the new buds.

Adair I got a question anyone around here do well with ponderosa pines If got great one I got my eye on would love to graft it with JBP.

I do like this type of pine over the more massive base types. Not that it's not a massive tree, but has a real light feel to it. Really going to be a nice tree, the bark is to die for. Hope it gets back healthy for you quickly after your repot!

Judy, have no fear! Paul knows what he's doing. It will look great in a year or two!

I'm glad this tree ended up with Paul. He will take it up a notch.

This, by the way, is the kind of tree where it takes two people to repot. One to work the root ball, the other to hold it on its side.

Maybe if I'm lucky, Paul will ask me to come help when the time comes!

I am watching this thread closely. Love the look of that tree.

I prefer this tree rather tall. If he were to shorten the tree, the trunk isn't powerful enough and it would look like an average pine that will only be mediocre at best. Leaving it that tall allows it to have a different character, not a powerful pine that is a king amongst all, but rather a graceful lonely pine on a mountain side.
