I was camping at mid-elevations (~5000 ft) in the Cascades last weekend and saw many gorgeous looking dwarfed conifers of various sorts. I believe one can obtain a permit from the national forest to collect trees, so I'm interested in trying this out. However, I have no idea what sort of tools and techniques would be required to do it effectively, without harming the roots. Can anyone suggest a book or online guide for collecting trees like that?
