I’m looking for a source for plant material on the coast of South Carolina, Georgia or North Carolina. The only nursery doing anything with Bonsai close to me was in Savannah and this location recently closed. I’ve used The Bonsai Learning Center outside of Charlotte before and love working with Brad and Bryan, but would like to find an additional source. Thanks from a newbie to this forum. I just lost 16 trees due to an irrigation malfunction while I was out of town.

Greetings and welcome Aboard Bonsai Nut!

Ugh! I’m sure that hurt!

Think it would help us if the stage of material (seedling, developmental, refined also species conifer, deciduous, tropical, azalea etc).

Also wondering why these areas…. Perhaps the first information will help answer this question.

Pretty sure @Bonsai Nut has a good maple place in that neck of the woods.

Finally to help us help you in the future, please post your approximate location and USDA Plant Hardiness Zone on your incon info. To do this double tap your icon atop the page, then account details - the scroll down and enter these date and save.

Cheers

Greetings from charlotte! Next time you are up this way check out Bella bonsai nursery in mint hill. There is also a few members of the bonsai society of the Carolina’s that have a bit of material for sale. There’s also @johng in Colombia SC that offers material for sale. What species are you looking for?

Thanks! It looks like a good retail operation.

Make sure you go to shows and exhibits where vendors will congregate. The Winter Show in Kannapolis is a must.

There are not many bonsai nurseries in the immediate vicinity of Charlotte, but there are tons of Japanese maple and ornamental conifer nurseries where you can get decent source material if you know what to look for. Do a search, and then view the nursery on Google maps to check the size of the nursery.

The Atlanta Bonsai Society is holding it's annual auction on Saturday, Aug 17. You do not have to be a member to bid on anything.
The selection is unpredictable, but the prices are usually better than you would find at a retail nursery.

In past years, there has typically been a handful of higher quality trees that sell for $500-2500. Most of the trees are prebonsai selling for $75-300. There's also typically some younger trees that were donated to the club that sell for less than $50. Usually the fiercest bidding is on pots and suiseki, not the trees. I know I will be selling some field grown JBP and Trident Maples, no clue what else will be there.
