Golden State Bonsai Federation 2015 Show

I'll get some photos together and post more from the convention. In the meantime, I brought home a few things . . .

I snagged a couple of little pots from the Harry Hirao estate, along with a few trees from vendors:
A big Liquidambar orientalis - definitely a project (the roots need work and it's way too tall)
A cork bark elm - I'm interested in the top third and the bottom third; the middle can go away.
A juniper - kishu foliage, but I believe it's grafted on a prostrata trunk
A straight little trident to add to the few I've been collecting for a future forest
Oh, and I won some other random stuff in the raffles - fertilizer, root hormone, bonsai magazines . . . books about Chinese painting and Japanese home design?!

I had an absolute blast, met quite a few fellow Bnuts (thanks to everyone who recognized me and said hi) as well as other great bonsai folks, learned a lot, and will definitely do it again.

@Smoke did you just download all those pictures off of goggle and make that hole thing up?

Only $3000 for the tree..... crazy talk!

What does the $ from the event go to?

Very nice score!!

Where tradition meets innovation.... I'm anxious to see the innovations! Any thoughts from attendees?

A couple trees on pedastles??

"GSBF, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c) (3) educational organization which provides services and activities promoting the wonderful art of bonsai. GSBF is made up of member clubs in California and affiliate clubs in the adjoining States."
The federation also maintains public collections in CA, and, I believe, provides liability insurance for local clubs.
Auction proceeds support the GSBF; however, my understanding was that this year, some of the money from the late Harry Hirao's items would also go to his estate/family.

Sound very cool! Glad you had fun! I really wish there was something like this around me.

Well hopefully with help and guidance from you fine folks I'll be able to start one in the years to come.... I plan on sticking to the art of bonsai for the rest of my life.... and I would hope at some point I'll know enough to teach others.

It won't be to long you'll all be heading out my way! See ya guys in a few yeeeeaaaarrrs......

Unless you're on the coast; soon to be part of the Hawaiian Islands
Aleutians Islands maybe! The fault between the Pacific and North American plates slips north/south, so coastal SoCal (on the pacific plate) is slowly sailing north to Alaska, not west to Hawaii :)

You too could have that, all you need is about 85 clubs in one state to make it work.....

I feel really fortunate to have such a vigorous bonsai community where I live. I often see people elsewhere lamenting the fact that there are only one or two clubs within a four hour drive of them. I have five good options within 30 minutes, and within 60-90 minutes of drive time, another dozen or more, along with half a dozen cool bonsai nurseries. We have access to great teachers, great material and plenty of opportunities to see great trees in person.
