I picked up this gold shimpaku almost a year ago. its starting to get happy again. i slip potted it into something more comfortable and put some wire on it when i got it home. i want to repot into something bigger next spring because i won't be able to get it in the ground next year. probably moving soon.

I would not. The current pot looks overly large for the plant in there. It might even be the reason why there does not seem to be all that much growth happening. Or have you been trimming the plant?

i haven't trimmed it at all. when i slip potted it the root ball didn't look very healthy. i added barely an inch of extra soil between the side and the rootball. i thought the main reasons it didn't grow like crazy was because i wired it for the first time and it got over watered many times through spring and early summer.
i wanted to grow this tree out and thicken the trunk. growing in the ground is not an option.

In the substrate you have there, overwatering should not be an issue if the size of the pot matches the size of the tree; Which is what I was referring to when I suggested that maybe the pot was too large to get optimal growth. I know this is a htly debated subject. But I am convinced you get best growth in a moderately large pot. You have a small tree compared to the container, I think. but please see what the others have to say. By no means an expert.

i was just checking out a few posts on these subjects. great debates. the reason i think it was overwatered a little was because of the small amout of organic soil that was left in the root ball when i slip potted it. though it did seem like mostly roots. it is a cutting after all. best bet im thinking just let it grow in this pot another year. then maybe i can get it in the ground.

took some cuttings off the stuff i deleted for taper/design, added some wire to a few straight branches, and it's back to growing.

when you leave a wire on too long. that side was gonna be a jin anyway 😊

that flat of juniper cuttings from post #11 ended up failing 😥

repotted my golden sport into a smaller container. it had been staying a little too wet i think over the past couple years in an oversized pot, and a cat loosened it up last year taking a nap in the container (a good gage your pot is too big 😁).

Ooh nice yeah those colanders or a pond basket will definitely help with the surface roots and all around growth but it will air prune the roots so they aren’t overly big

new growth was starting so i repotted my regular shimpaku cutting i had bought the same day back in '17. it's starting to finally get a decent shape to it.

Never thought of using zip ties as an alternative to wire for tree anchors. Great idea! Looking good.

Those red mites are predatory mites, spider mites tend to be white or brown and not nearly as fast. Keep the predators, please!

Ive seen some tangential discussions on watering for shimpaku in this thread.

What do shimpaku prefer for their soil? On the dry side?

light moisture level. there wasn't much growth when they stayed too wet. root rot will start happening. they didn't like drying out as much as the pines. the two i have are responding well to the colanders. the soil dries almost completely after two days, so i water once everyday and it seems perfect.
