Been mulling over some pot ideas here, but none really seem to capture the nature of this tree.

Here is the tree in 2020, planted in a 22 x 15.5 x 8inch wood box.

And here are a couple of mockups I am considering, pics are from 2022

Soft Rectangle 22″ x 15 5/8″, 5 1/2″ D - interior

hard rectangle: 22 3/4″ x 16 1/2″, 8″ depth interior

Lotus – 23 1/2″ x 18 3/4″, 6 3/4″ interior depth

smaller lotus - 20 1/2″ x 16″ x 5 1/2″ - interior

How do you feel about slab/rock plantings? It's pretty hard to match a tree to a pot when it doesn't have enough direction (development) to see what "style" (for lack of a better word) it will move toward. I would even think about perhaps a large round nailhead pot, that way you can look at it from more than one angle as you develop, and round may be what this is looking for anyway...

I agree, style it if/when it’s ready then think about a pot. It gives you a couple years to get one commission or find one.

I agree with other saying wait to find the right pot until after the material is styled.

If it were my tree and styled the way I envision it I would lean towards the style of a Jonathan Cross (if I could afford such a piece 😅). If I’m to be perfectly honest though, I envision most of not all western American juniper species in JC pots. I think it best reflects the land they come from. Probably more affordable would be something from our own @penumbra , this could absolutely be at home in an ample sized “Stone Age” pot.

Appreciate all the feedback here! The first thing that came to mind was a slab of sorts...

This tree has been in this wood box since 2018/2019, which is why I am eager to repot. That said, I can probably still style this year and a repot next year into something more fitting. The round nailhead is a nice idea though and might entertain that for now, If I can find one big enough!

I agree with you that if it’s been in the collection box since 2018 then it probably needs to be repotted. I’d just go with the deepest rectangle for now as a transition between the box and the “final” pot which you can select in a few years after the tree is styled. This is my approach anyway, just my 2 cents.
