In May I received a bonsai tree as a sympathy gift after a death in my family. I have an aversion to cut flowers so apparently a tree was decided on…

Anyway, I have no experience with plants, have never had one successfully, in all of my 53 years.

It came in a ceramic container, I put it on my unheated porch (I live in central Wisconsin) and watered it daily. It seemed to be okay and the one day - it flowered!

I started trying to ID it (it came with nothing) but am really not sure where to even begin. I’ve read enough general bonsai info to know that it’s going dormant for the winter but I don’t know what’s best for this variety. Currently it’s in my kitchen, moderate light exposure (not that we get much sun), I’ve slowed down how often I water it, it’s losing leaves.

Can anyone help me ID this tree so I can search for more specific advice on how to keep it healthy this winter and next year? I’ve added a picture of when it bloomed and one from today.

At first I was not thrilled about this gift, but it has grown on me 💚

It is an azalea, an evergreen flowering shrub. There are many many varieties with different care levels and temperature requirements. It will not live inside and may require some protection outside in your climate, depending upon variety.

I don't think (at least at this point in my journey) I can grow them here, but I'm fairly certain you have an azalea on your hands.
Welcome to the NutHouse! This is definitely the right place to get your questions answered! You mentioned your location in central Wisconsin; if you tap on your profile, you can add that info, so you won't have to tell us every time, as we'll be able to see it, too.
I'm sure someone will be able to give you sound advice to help your tree to thrive.

Thank you - updated my profile accordingly!

Thank you - is there a resource you recommend to narrow down what variety I might have. The winters here are quite harsh so I want to do what I can to have this one thrive.

Would it be possible to ask the gifter about where they purchased it?
You may be able to find information from seller or website as to exactly what you have. From there, you can research all you want.
