Get this seedling on it own roots

I might purchase this Beni maiko seedling, but the graft is a bit high. Come spring, can I add a washer above the graft and then plant it with the soil above the water washer? Or will I be buried in too much material for a successful re-root.

it might work but it is always difficult to know for sure...if you really want to increase your odds you need to do a bunch of them. if Japanese maples cultivars rooted easily and performed well on their own roots you would not see grafted ones.
 
@johng yup, your right. It’s best to just increase your odds.
 
Let it grow with graft till it is the size you want then air layer above the graft.
