Fun with Maples

These have been sitting on beds of pumice. I originally had the red maple siting in sand , but the roots started to escape and the tree responded well but due to how small the pot is , I fear that it will become more reliant on the escaped roots than the roots in the pot. I’m going to cut that apex off either this year or next and cut down again to next set of foliage depending how well it does remainder of growing season into late September/ early October

This grouping will never leave this pot .. it’s gonna be cool to get more direction the trees are all secure finally and settled in.. now gonna let it grow and then start cresting branch scaffolding. I let these escape on pumice to the roots still grow and then will start to clump up as well…. This is my favorite Nao pot I own actually .. I know a lot of people have his pots and he’s my favorite potter , I really want to be someone that does his pots justice

View attachment 553611Getting stable .. all the trees in the first planting are for wiring good and the forest is establishing nice root network.. will be awesome to see this develop through the years

Looks like someone is having fun with maples indeed! And learning a lot on the way.

One thought. Might think about selective top pruning certain trees soon to begin accentuating the girth/height difference of the individual trees, intentionally slowing specific trees down . Our maples two-three years in larger containers start gaining strength and the differences quickly begin to grow away.

Cheers

The nodes on all of these look awfully long... are these fully established or brand spankin' new?

I'm just a beginner so please excuse my ignorance.

In between which ones specifically you gotta front and cut back and the repeat the process to build secondary , tertiary etc

I guess I was referring to the Japanese Maple stand/forest; but having taken a second look, I think your pictures actually make the process of making those little shohin forests a little clearer to me.
Looks, basically, like you put freshly rooted cuttings together before any kind of growth or training, which is why the nodes look rather long for the size of the trees. Then, with the tiny root space and some very thoughtful pruning and defoliation, the little trees remain THAT tiny.

Being new, it seems contrary to most advice I've been given, to mount freshly rooted cuttings without developing ramification and nebari for a while.... but I think I'm gonna have to give a shohin forest a shot. There are several different Maples in my neighborhood including a nice Japanese. :)

By the way, is this one a Silver Maple? 1719157812161.jpeg

Nope that is a Japanese maple I’ll take a pic of it too. I missed a few of the other ones I’m growing out on their owns in various media to see how each do
