Ed,
Mine never really had a whole lot of roots and absolutly no nebari or large roots of any type. But the roots it did have were all fine feeder roots. Again, it didn't have a lot of them nor where they long. So I pruned them (I'd call it trimming since I only snipped the edge of the ball) thinking it would cause the roots to split and grow more. Ugh what a mistake! With in 3 days all the leaves curled up and dried out. I tried several things but nothing worked. 2 months pass and I'm thinking this tree is a goner. Last resort I pulled it out of its pot ditched the bonsai soil potted it in Sphagnum Moss and a weeks later buds were forming and now it has thrown out all new growth. When I pulled it from the moss 3 months later to pot back in with soil there were more roots then ever before and now the tree is happily ever after! Might wanna give that a shot. Sphagnum Moss really does wonders for roots!
