Would it be better to use a wider, shallower pot or a deeper but slightly smaller pot for repot?
I am certain it is rootbound as this was the pot I have had it in for a year and a chopstick won't even start into the soil.

I was a bit leery of this mica pot as I am familiar with the profusion of roots this tree produces.

My quandary is whether a larger surface pot would tend to get less rootbound as the roots could run horizontal.

The pot I am considering is not what anyone would call "shallow" as some depth is needed for this climate.
I am pretty certain that it can't go back in the pictured pot.

God only knows what a solid mass the roots might have produced in this one year.

Oh. Okay, I'll go with the larger shallower pot. Like no one said, it looks better anyway.

I didn't even see this thread until now, but it sounds like you've already made up your mind. Enjoy your shallower pot. If it's bigger than the old pot, it should be an improvement.
