Flowers 2020

One reason why I grow orchids: flowers in the winter :D

This is the first of my "short day" orchids to bloom. Many more are well on their way :) I think I have more winter flowering plants than I do plants that flower in any other season!

Psychopsis mendenhall- the butterfly orchid. This spike is over 2-1/2 years old. Does anyone know how long they'll go?

Many years...they are sequential bloomers off the same inflorescence. Chop it and it might be a while before the plant decides to make another one!

I love that pot! Do you know who made it?

...and because the thread demands:

phragmipedium schroederae from a few months ago. This one oddly decided to bloom in August when generally it's a reliable January bloomer for me.

Is that a miltonia x brassia of some sort? Man, this thread makes me miss all my orchids. I've only got a few these days...used to have over 100! Next house will have a greenhouse :)

I need to get rid of some of my schroeder...I've got 2 x 14" pots (4 large divisions in each pot) that are starting to get overcrowded! Mine sit on the floor in front of a south east facing glass door year round. Plenty of direct sun (through glass) in the summer...but inside. I've not had a problem with them burning. In the winter, that area is much cooler due to being so near such a large pane of glass. The cooler nights and shorter days seems to be what triggers them and I get blooms pretty regularly late January/early February. These blooms in August are a fluke for this plant! In fact, I had some smaller pots in hand and was just about to break up one of the pots to see if I could sell it off when I noticed that spike. Two of the plants in that pot were in spike so I set it back down and let them bloom :) Maybe next year I'll try again to sell off some extra divisions...

As for payment to the thread gods:

A competition with my grandson. He's in a different state. We each started with a packet of various seeds to see whose garden did the best :) Here's one of my sunflowers. High winds had bent it over...but it still wanted to flower! Yep...that flower is from the bent stalk! It didn't flower until almost a month after the stalk broke.

I never did well with the one I had, or any other indoor bonsai wishing you luck!
Grainy, did you over crop it?
Thanks, so far so good. I'm sure that's the problem, over cropped it.

Oh dear, I gotta get outta this thread. You all doing orchids. Beautiful tempting orchids, oh my.
Itch-be-gone.
Lol, most of mine are cheapies from Aldi's or Home Depot. Sit in my windowsill at work, water once a week. Easy, peasy. They bloom almost continuously.

Awesome pot on the other one. You are a very talented potter.
Thanks Carol. One of these days I’ll get around to making a “small” purple pot for ya. Btw Serissa is one of the bonsai 101 plants....I killed my fair share back in the early days. Congrats You seem to have figured it out.
